Guest exhibition from Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria, presenting Alojz Orel’s photographs named ‘The Pula Album’ opened at the Zagreb City Museum (Opatička 20) and remains open until November 17, 2019.
Alojz Orel was an extremely talented art and documentary photographer born in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1918 who is still remembered as a photographer in love with freedom and experimentation using almost all known photography techniques. Orel has won a number of awards and has exhibited at numerous solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. In 1947 he opened a photo atelier in Pula and soon fell in love with this small Istrian town.
From the beginning of his work he was dedicated to perfecting the knowledge of shooting techniques, making and developing photographs. In addition to photographic work, he also worked on the design of advertising materials, guides and books for numerous tourist and cultural institutions. He designed the first tourist leaflet of Pula in 1955 and participated in the development and publication of the first photo monograph of Pula in 1964. Today’s collection of his works consists of over 40,000 photographs.
The topic of the current Zagreb’s exhibition is the city of Pula, which is related to the professional and artistic career of this distinguished master of photography. A selection of 40 photographs, featuring a variety of Pula motifs, is presented. In addition to the photographs, a few original items were presented that marked his photographic career (photographic apparatus, the first tourist leaflet of Pula, the first photo monograph of Pula etc.) as well as his awards. So far, the same exhibition was presented in Ljubljana and Novi Sad.
The museum is opened Tue – Sat from 10 am till 7 pm and Sun 10 am -2 pm.
