New dormitories – the greatest legacy of the European Universities Games

The primary contribution of entire European Universities Games Zagreb – Rijeka 2016 is the reconstruction of student accommodation facilities in Zagreb and Rijeka. It will significantly increase student standards in Croatia. The last time student facilities were under the massive construction was during the Summer Universiade in 1987, which demonstrates the importance of organizing big sports events to improve student standards. Athletes and volunteers at the European Universities Games will be accommodated in the Athletes Village ‘Stjepan Radić’ in Zagreb and Athletes Village University Campus in Rijeka.

Thanks to European Universities Games, Zagreb student dormitories ‘Stjepan Radić’ and ‘Cvjetno naselje’ went through complete reconstruction – brand new furniture, insulation, facades, environment, sports facilities, rooms with refrigerators, etc. Students should move back to dormitories after Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

On the other hand, Rijeka will have 754 brand beds in three pavilions at the University Campus in Rijeka. The construction should be over during May 2016 while the newly built facilities will solve current accommodation issues. The main difference between the new student dormitory University Campus and old dormitory Ivan Goran Kovacic is that the basic accommodation unit will be new apartments. This means that two double rooms will share kitchen, toilet, bathroom, and balcony.

The members of EUSA (European Universities Sports Association) Supervision Commission also visited accommodation facilities during their reconstruction. They were satisfied with the overall progress and did not hide their contentment with the quality of accommodation that will welcome over 5,000 athletes from more than 300 universities from 45 European countries. Given that the European Universities Games will organize competitions for students with a disability for the first time, part of the accommodation capacities will be adapted just for them.
