If you are a vegetarian or a vegan traveling trough Zagreb, you might find yourself feeling lost in the meat-centric dining culture here. A random local on the street probably couldn’t tell you the nearest vegan restaurant, or would tell you the dreaded you can have potatoes line while pointing you to a grill house.
But don’t worry, there are more and more people in Zagreb who are quitting meat in their diet, and when there’s a significant group of people on the market, the market responds. In the past few years Zagreb has seen an increase of vege, vegan, raw and health food diners, bars and restaurants and the number keeps getting higher.
To help you navigate to those bars, Jelena Topčić, a journalist and activists, has edited a google map featuring almost all the venues offering something for vegans. The map also features what type of products the venues offer if they are not all vegan, and is separated into several categories of venues, from markets to fast food joints.
It’s still a work in progress, as new ones are opening and old restaurants are more inclined to serve vegan dishes, but it’s a good starting point if you want to have a decent meal.
