What do you get when you give 36 talented international artists a concertina sketchbook (bloc made of a single sheet of unfolding paper) and tell them to go wild? You get a 36. Mountains festival of illustrations. The two day festival held at the Croatian Association of Artists’ gallery (HDLU, Žrtava fašizma square) aims to present contemporary illustrative art in a new and creative way, stepping away from the classical exhibition/museum form.
The idea was inspired by the series of landscape prints by a Japanese painter Katsushika Hokusai titled 36 Views of Mount Fuji. The festival gives an open call to artists and a three member jury picks 36 of them who are then given specially designed concertina sketchbooks with 36 pages. What they do with those 36 pages is completely up to the artists.
Finished works are then presented at the two day festival which also includes workshops, art installations, discussions with artists and other illustration related content.
The festival opens on Friday, September 2nd from 7pm and will last until September 4th.
