Celebrate Midsummer as the Swedes Do!

Embassy of Sweden in Zagreb and ‘Little Picnic’ decided to mark the Swedish holiday Midsommer by organizing the celebration of the beginning of Summer in a Swedish way, in Zagreb’s Maksimir park on Saturday, June 15th, 2019.

Midsommer is one of the most important holidays in the Swedish calendar, always celebrated between 19 and 25 June. Interestingly, midsummer for Swedes  is not celebrated in the middle of the summer but right in the beginning, at the end of June.

The celebration in Maksimir starts at 3 pm with a coffee and the Swedish cookies – FIKA, followed by a program for children of 3+ years, consisting of a number of workshops such as making flower wreaths, painting wooden horses, reading Swedish books for children and dancing around pole with flowers to the rhythm of traditional Swedish songs. The children’s program will be followed by a plogging competition – a new fitness trend coming from Sweden, which involves picking up litter from the nature while jogging.

The evening program includes chilling at the Midsommar picnic with Swedish music and screening of the Mamma Mia! Here we go again movie, during which all the visitors are invited to dance and sing along the everlasting ABBA hits.
