On this day, 25 years ago, we witnessed a birth of a nation being played out in our Parliament. Acting on the will of the people legitimized by a referendum on independence the Parliament had unanimously voted on the Resolution of Departing from Yugoslavia, thus making the communist confederation nonexistent. Fifteen more laws were voted on that day that made the legal foundation for the new Republic.
It was a great day and a sad day. Croatia had declared its independence in the midst of the war against Yugoslavian National Army that would last for four more years. Today we celebrate the legislative and democratic processes that took place on that day and on which a modern democratic state we have today made its foundations.
It is a national holiday, and a lot of locations were closed for the day.
