Mimara Museum Hosts Japanese Day and African Carnival

Zagreb and Mimara Museum will be covered with two flags today – Japanese and African. The Japanese Embassy in Croatia will celebrate Japan Day at 2 pm with a performance by taiko drummers. Meanwhile, the first African carnival in Croatia will start at 2 pm as well, in front of Mimara Museum.

Japanese event is a one-day event with many topics, workshops, demonstrations in martial arts, tea ceremonies, ikebana, an origami workshop and Japanese food tastings. By 6 pm visitors will be able to listen to a lecture on Japanese pop culture and a particular part of the lecture dedicated to the favorite game Pokemon GO. After which attendees will be able to play Pokemon GO. The next lecture will be about super fast Railway (Maglev) technology and its linear superconductivity. Throughout the day, visitors will be able to see several anime movies, demonstrations of Japanese martial arts, of Japanese food and ikebana. If you come to Mimara, try to learn basics of the Japanese language at the course for beginners or to create something at the origami workshop. If you are not up to any of these, learn about haiku poetry or join the competition in cosplay and Harajuku fashion. After this Day of Japan, Zagreb will continue celebrating Japan with various autumn events – for example with a Japanese film and concerts by top Japanese musicians. Feel free to join!

What about African carnival? The first African carnival in Croatia organised by Nigerian Kikelomo Tope will start at 2 pm in front of Mimara Museum. The drummers and many costumed Croatian-African citizens and their friends will walk through the center of the city (from

‘For years I had a wish to keep my African heritage safe and to show it to Croatian people. For me, and many Africans who are living in this country, culture is the way of living, and we want to share it with a people of Croatia and the entire globe. This is the first of many events that we, African people, will organise here. We are waiting for everyone to join us’, says Kikelomo Tope.

What to expect today? The drummers and many costumed Croatian-African citizens and their friends will walk through the center of the city (from Mimara to ban Jelacic Square) and back. But that is not the spot where African Carnival will finish. The colorful event will continue in the evening at the big VIP party in Gallery Club. While day event is free (except for those who want buy flags, makeup or costumes), for the evening part you must RSVP few hours in advance or buy VIP tickets here.
